Aldehydes are used for the production of plastics, solvents, dyes, tannins, perfumes and medicines. These ’’dehydrogenated alcohols’’ are chemical compounds having the functional aldehyde group -CHO. Formaldehyde is produced in large quantities worldwide. It is used as a disinfectant, as a preservative for cosmetics and as a raw material in the chemical industry. Acetaldehyde which occurs during the course of the ethanol degradation and is involved in the development of the so-called alcohol-hangover. Aldehydes are irritants for the eye, skin and respiratory tracts and potential mutagens and carcinogens.
