For the analysis of anions with polymer based separation columns via ion chromatography, a special detection system is needed. Typically, anions can easily and fast be analyzed using conductivity detection. Caused by the applied buffer systems and their high conductivity, an additional apparatus is needed that suppresses the conductivity of the eluent. The suppressor decreases the eluent background conductivity and increases the sensitivity for the sample ions. Silica based columns cannot be used in a supressed system because of the high pH values of the used eluents.
